Kashi

Abode of Shiva

Kashi, also known as Varanasi or Banaras, is one of the oldest living cities in the world and the spiritual heart of Bharat (India). Revered as the Abode of Lord Shiva, Kashi is not just a geographical location — it is a tirtha (sacred crossing) where the earthly and the divine meet.

Why Kashi is Sacred

  • It is said in the scriptures that Kashi was founded by Lord Shiva himself, and He never leaves this city.
  • The Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga stands at the center of the spiritual universe. Worshipping here Shiva will grant moksha (liberation).
  • The city rests on the trishul (trident) of Lord Shiva, making it eternally indestructible—even during cosmic dissolution.

City of Light (Kāśī = The Luminous)

  • The name Kashi comes from the Sanskrit root “kāsh”, meaning to shine.
  • It is believed that those who die in Kashi are liberated from the cycle of birth and death, as Lord Shiva whispers the Taraka Mantra in their ears at the time of death.

Temples and Mysticism

  • Apart from Kashi Vishwanath, the city is home to hundreds of ancient temples, ghats, and akharas.
  • The Dashashwamedh Ghat and the Ganga Aarti draw thousands daily in a soul-stirring spectacle of devotion.
  • Saints, yogis, and seekers have meditated here for centuries from Adi Shankaracharya to Tulsidas and Bhartrihari.

Ganga and Liberation

  • The Ganga River flows in a northward direction (uttarvahini) at Kashi — considered highly auspicious.
  • Bathing in the Ganga here is believed to wash away lifetimes of karma.

Kashi is not just a place — it’s a state of being.

It is the gateway to inner light, wisdom, and moksha, where the presence of Shiva is felt in every stone, every mantra, and every breath.
