Auspicious Days (Vaara) for a Haircut
According to Vedic Astrology and texts like the Dharma Sindhu, certain days of the week are considered favorable for cutting hair, each bringing a different benefit. These days are ruled by specific planets whose energies are conducive to this activity.
- Wednesday (Budhvar): This is widely considered one of the best days for a haircut. Ruled by the planet Mercury (Budh), a haircut on this day is believed to bring prosperity, wealth, and good fortune. It’s said to enhance intellect and communication skills. It’s especially auspicious for students and those in business.
- Friday (Shukravar): Ruled by the planet Venus (Shukra), Friday is a great day for beauty and grooming. Cutting your hair on a Friday is believed to enhance your physical appearance, improve your relationships, and bring success in creative or artistic fields.
- Monday (Somvar): Ruled by the Moon (Soma), Monday is generally considered a good day for a haircut. It’s associated with mental peace and well-being, and a haircut on this day is believed to increase your lifespan. However, the Dharma Sindhu suggests that those who have a son should avoid a haircut on this day.
Inauspicious Days (Vaara) to Avoid
Avoiding a haircut on certain days is believed to prevent negative outcomes, as the ruling planets’ energies are considered malefic for this specific activity.
- Sunday (Raviwar): Ruled by the Sun (Surya), a haircut on Sunday is believed to lead to a reduction in lifespan and could invite conflict and misfortune.
- Tuesday (Mangalvar): Ruled by Mars (Mangal), the planet of aggression and conflict, cutting hair on a Tuesday is strictly avoided. It is believed to cause a loss of health, debt, and a shortened lifespan.
- Thursday (Guruvar): Ruled by Jupiter (Guru), the planet of knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual growth. Thursday is considered a sacred day. Getting a haircut on this day is thought to be an act of disrespect to the deities and gurus and is believed to cause a loss of wealth and wisdom. Students, in particular, should avoid a haircut on this day.
- Saturday (Shaniwar): Ruled by Saturn (Shani), a haircut on Saturday is believed to be highly inauspicious. It is said to bring misfortune, financial difficulties, and bad luck, and could even lead to an early death.
Auspicious and Inauspicious Tithis, Horas, and Other Considerations
Beyond the day of the week, other astrological factors from Vedic texts also play a crucial role in determining the most auspicious time for a haircut.
- Tithis (Lunar Days): The Dharma Sindhu lists specific lunar days that should be avoided. These include Prathama (1st), Chaturthi (4th), Shashti (6th), Ashtami (8th), Navami (9th), Ekadashi (11th), Trayodashi (13th), Chaturdashi (14th), and Purnima (Full Moon) and Amavasya (New Moon).
- Horas (Planetary Hours): The concept of Hora divides the day into planetary hours. To find a truly auspicious time, one should ideally get a haircut during the Hora of Mercury (Budh) or Venus (Shukra) on an auspicious day. Cutting hair during an inauspicious Hora, even on a good day, is not recommended.
- Nakshatras (Lunar Mansions): Certain Nakshatras are considered favorable for grooming activities. These include Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta, and Revati. A haircut on these days is believed to bring positive results. Conversely, one should avoid a haircut during certain powerful or malefic Nakshatras like Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Punarvasu, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Jyeshtha, and Mula.
